Scinvivos OCT catheter is meant as an imaging tool which can be used with normal white light cystoscopy (WLC). With WLC the bladder wall surface is screened. When a piece of suspicious tissue is identified during WLC, the OCT catheter will be introduced via the working channel of the scope.
With the images supplied by the OCT catheter, the physician will be able to determine if the suspicious tissue is indeed a tumor, and if it is a tumor s/he can classify the tumor as muscle invasive or non-muscle invasive. In this way the sensitivity and specificity of WLC will be increased, and less biopsies and unnecessary interventions are needed.
Scinvivos imaging catheter also enables the use of laser photocoagulation. The big disadvantage of laser photocoagulation is that no tissue is available for further pathologic examination, and that you are never sure what the stage of the tumor was. However, with the Scinvivo catheter it is possible to determine the stage of the tumor real-time during initial cystoscopy, and laser photocoagulation can be applied immediately afterwards.
Scinvivos catheter has a whole range of application outside the bladder, as it can be applied in all hollow organs (e.g. stomach, lungs, colon, uterus). The catheter can also be used to image the larynx, the inner ear, or to image during laparoscopic surgery.
